It’s been great to hear from Devan Ekambaram again, until now it had been some four years since the amazing Brindavan album in 2022. Here Devan is back with a vibrant new single, and one containing the talents of singer Susha. This is one of those singles that heard once, is very easy to leave on repeat for a second time.

After a little research “Varuvaaiy” is essentially a spiritual, yearning song. The title “Varuvaaiy” means something like “Will you come?”  “Please come”—an emotionally charged invitation to Lord Krishna, who the singer longs for. The opening part is almost ethereal in its perception; the hovering keyboard and percussion add multiple layers of colours and textures, all of which are incredibly compelling.

Pay close attention to the combination of instrumentation and the production, of which it’s a veritable collection of classy segments weaved into a globally fused masterpiece. The balance of the vocals and musical prowess is utterly brilliant, superbly produced and engineered to a very high level.

The vocal line has a long, lyrical contour rather than lots of short pop phrases. You'll notice phrases that stretch upward and then resolve downward. That creates the feeling of yearning, and that's musically appropriate for Varuvaaiy, the melody itself feels like it's reaching toward something, and that something is going to be a very credible chart position with utter ease for Varuvaaiy by Devan Ekambaram.
